The 20th Anniversary of Daughters of the Dust

In 1990 Julie Dash’s critically acclaimed classic film Daughters of the Dust won the award for Best Cinematography at The Sundance Film Festival. The stunning film was then released in 1992 via an innovative theatrical distribution model, devised collaboratively by KJM3 Entertainment Group and Kino International. On Friday, March 9th, Re-mixed and Remastered Vol 2 will connect a new generation of viewers to the Daughters of the Dust experience.  Continuing the dialogue from the last year’s ReMixed and ReMastered: Defining and Distributing The Black Image in the Era of Globalization conference, we will also reflect upon the film’s unique and successful distribution model. With this year’s announcement of Ava DuVernay as the first African-American woman to win the Sundance award for Best Directing, our discussion will explore “How far have we really come?”

Hear our respected panel of scholars, cultural critics, filmmakers, and industry professionals; see the film on the big screen, and meet the cast and crew of the film at the networking reception to follow. Confirmed panelists to date include: Michelle Materre (Media Studies faculty member, The New School for Public Engagement), Kathryn Bowser, Mark Walton and Marlin Adams, the founders of KJM3 Entertainment Group, the company responsible for the distribution and marketing of the film with Kino International; Gary Palmucci, Kino Lorber; Grace Blake, veteran Hollywood and independent film producer; Thulani Davis, cultural critic and author; Tracyann Williams, Cultural Studies faculty member, The New School for Public Engagement; and Leslie Harris, filmmaker and Fabio Parasecoli, Coordinator of the Food Studies Program, The New School for Public Engagement
